4. What are the regional differences and similarities involving poverty in the U.S.A?
The amount of people living under the povety line vary by state. The state of Missisppi has the largest population of people living in poverty. Other Southern states such as West Virginia, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky and Arkansas also have large percentages of people living in poverty. States such as Maryland, New Jersey, and Conneticut have much less people living in poverty. States like Maine, Illionis and Pennsylvania are in the middle and even though these states have a high level of people living in poverty the percentage isn't as high as Missisppi and Louisian ; etc.
5. How does poverty contribute to the homeless situation?
A lot of people in poverty are those people who are homeless. Homeless people make up a percentage of those living under poverty. Sometimes even wealthy people are the ones who lose their jobs then end up becoming homeless. Just in New York City there is a shortage of homeless shelters. The lack of rehab centers for the mentally sick people results in more homeless people because those people end up on streets therefor adding to the millions of those living in poverty.
6. What is welfare?
There are many different types on welfare but each are invlved with te government trying to provide for the welfare of its citizens. This can take place throught social welfare provisions, social security, or financial aid.
7. How many people are on food stamps in our country? Food stamps the main U.S program which helps the needy buy food set a record in September as more than 31.5 million Americans.
8. How many people go hungry in the U.S.A everyday? One in six of the people could not afford to buy sufficient food to stay healthy at some point last year. More then a million children go to bed hungry in the U.S.
9.What can be done to eliminate poverty in our country? 1.donate money 2. build more shelters 3. donate clothing;food
10. How does poverty affect ones ability to be educated in the U.S.A? -insecurity of themselves to come to school looking dirty wearing the same things all the time ; -to busy working one or more jobs to support their families.
11. What resources are available to help people who live in poverty? -Acumen Fund ; - Trees For Life ; - Sponser A Child ; - American Rescue Workers ; -American Second Harvest ; - Food Research And Action Center.
12. Would you consider working to help eliminate poverty in the U.S.A? I would help to try and eliminate poverty due to the fact that many people lives are taken away from them. I think people should all have the right to live a steady life and have food to eat everynight. For children expecially education is most important and without it you will not get far in life which will lead to poverty. Eliminating poverty would be a great success to the U.S.A.
13. What does the Census Bureau define as living in poverty? the census burea counts all earnings such as uneployment compensation, workers compensation, social security, public assiatance, veterans payments, survivor benefits, retirement or pension income, rents, trusts, estates, alimony, child support, interests, dividends, education assistance, etc. These are all counted before taxes. the poverty threshold for one person is 10,991 according to the census bureau. for two people it is 14,051. 3 people its 17,163 and for 4 people 22,025. for 5 people its 26,049 for 6 people its 29,456 and for 7 people its 33,529.
14. What is the United Nations Convention on the Rights Of The Child? What do you think/feel about it? The United Nations convention on the rights of the child is list of childrens rights. These rights include health care, good living conditions, economic rights and social and cultural rights, education, civil rights and juvenile justice rights. I feel protected as long as this policy is in use, its a much needed policy. It's a way for children to be protected and its a way for children to be given opportunuties to live and have a chance to grow up to be well working citizens. Every child deserves healthcare and an education. No child shud be denied protection due to what life they are born into.
15. Why has the U.S.A failed to adopt this treaty? The United States hasn't ratified the treaty yet because it takes a long time for the U.S to ratify any treaty. They take years to analyze and fully understand the consequences of any adopted treaty. If there is a lot of controversy about a treaty, it becomes a political issue which puts the adoption process even longer. The U.S is having a hard time wit this because there has been a lot of political controversy about the intent of the treaty.
16. What are the top 5 risk factors for becoming poor in our country? Some risk factors of poverty include single -parent homes which contribute to poverty because there's only income coming from one person, unemployed people who are homless or living off unemployment compensation also live in poverty, those with low or no education which makes it harder for people to find good jobs, families with many children who's providers have a hard time taking care of all the family members, disabled people who are unable to work and people with drug addiction. Some other risk factors include discrimination in the work place making it hard for minorities to find jobs and generational poverty which is when kids are born into poverty and continue living like that.

ANIMAL FARM PROJECT

In Germany they came first for Communists, and i didnt speak up because i wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and i didnt speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didnt speak because i was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by the time no one was left to speak up.
- This poem is about a Protestant pastor during World War II who didn't speak up about the Nazi's because Hitler was killing Communists, Jews, Catholics, and Trade Unionists. He didnt speak up because he felt non related to any of these groups. Martin didn't feel like this would affect him therefor he didn't care to do anything. At the end when Hitler came for him there was noone to speak up for him because everyone had died. This situation can relate to "karma." This relates to karma since Niemoller didnt't speak up before for anybody or help anyone no one was there for him.
I did not have a reaction to this poem. I dont usually have reactions to things i cant relate too. This is weird because i am Jewish and many Jewish lives were taken during World War II. Hitler was a very powerful man who couldn't be stopped. I did not have a reaction because i wasn't alive during that period of time. I was unable to see what really happened and the sacrifices people made.
RESEARCH:
Mollie- white russians
Mr Jones- Czar Nicholas 2 (poor leaders; misteated animals)
Napoleon- Joseph Stalin
Snow Ball- Leon Trotsky
All Pigs- Bolsheviks (started October Revolution)
Rest of animals- Protetariats
Old Major- Karl Marx(started the Rebellion)
For each of the quotes do the following : explain what the quote means and what you think or feel about it.
1) Old Major warns, "Your resolution must never falter. No argument must lead you astray. Never listen when they tell you that Man and the animals have a common interest....we must not come to resemble him...No animal must ever live in a house or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade."
I think it strongly means that the animals don't agree with the humans ; they have nothing in common.
2) Orwell narrates, "Nobody stole, nobody grumbled over his rations, the quarreling and biting and jealousy which had been normal features of life in the old days had almost disappeared."
The quote was reffering to when all the problems were solved and there was nothing to worry about.
3) Squealer consoles the animals, saying, "Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure. On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?" The classic hypocrisy seen here is too hard to miss.
It means that only Napoleon will make decisions which is not fair because everyone should be able to make their own decisions and choices.
4) Orwell explains, "Once again the animals were conscious of a vague uneasiness. Never to have any dealings with human beings, never to engage in trade, never to make use of money- had not these been among the earliest resolutions passed at the first triumphant Meeting when Jones was expelled?"
5) As Napoleon was deceiving the neighboring farmers he was also tricking his own animals. The scapegoat was again Snowball. "Whenever anything went wrong it became usual to attribute it to Snowball." In fact many of the claims begin to sound ridiculous to the objective mind. Of course, Squealer's mission is to keep everything subjective in the minds of the animals.
This quote is resembling a confession of controlling minds because it was stated that Napoleon was tricking his animals.
6) So Napoleon, with the help of his dogs, slaughters anyone who is said to be disloyal. "...the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon's feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown there since the expulsion of Jones." To top it off, Napoleon outlaws Beasts of England, which had served as one of the only remaining ties between Animal Farm and old Major.
This quote explains that having too much power may change the person you are. Having power can make you cocky and greedy.
7) But when Muriel reads the writing on the barn wall to Clover, interestingly, the words are, "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause."
They change the commandments. The change came because now it seemed like it had been okay for the leader to kill another animal just so he can get away with it.
8) But to justify this little episode, arrangements to amend the rules are made. "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess."
the eigth quote hows how one will change certain things in order to feel number one to feel like there in power.
9) Orwell states " Somehow as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer -except, of course, for the pigs and the dogs."
This quote means that the pigs who were the animals in charge would get the best while all the other animals would be put after them. The hardworkers would not recieve any rewards for their hard work.
10) The 7 commandments are abridged for the last time, simply reading, "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."
This quote is saying everyones equal but the higherups get more benefits. This is like our society today. It compares to the classes we have tha seperates people from there income and life style.

mini film essay

HealthCare is one of the biggest issues that face the United States today. This is one of the most powerful and wealthy countries except we still dont have universal healthcare. Countries like Great Britain and Canada have universal healthcare but we havent been able to catch up. the fact that we dont have HealthCare affects the lives of many people living in this country. Many people who are above the poverty line still cant afford healthcare. The people under the poverty line have medicaid except medicaid dosent cover everything it should.

assiqnment #1 corporations and globalization

A sweatshop is a workplace where workers are put to extremeworking, not given a living wage or benefits, poor working conditions, and bad discipline, such as verbal and physical abuse. Since sweatshop workers are paid less than their daily expenses, they are never able to save any money to improve their lives. workers can not support their family or keep them healthy.

TREATMENTS OF WORKERS, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND WAGES

- The government can ease on the immigration laws so its easier for people to get green cards so they can find real jobs and they dont have to work illegally. The government can send people randomly and more often to check buisnesses and see how the workers are being treated. There can be harsher punishments for people who hire illegal immigrants because then they take away those jobs from other people because they get paid less.

REFLECTION FRIDAY 10.2.09

One thing that i learned this week was the importance of letting people be aware of dating violence. Many teens are not well aware of the effects that come from violence. If teens learn more about this topic dating violence will become less used.

Another thing i learned was how to add images to my blog. Adding images to blogs make your blog more realistic. It pictures an image in peoples mind which makes it more interesting.
